China’s
President Xi Jinping and the US’ President Donald Trump had their first
face-to-face talk last Thursday and Friday in the US. While they did not
arrive at a concrete agreement, the meeting helped to underline the
“outstanding” relationship between both countries and established a framework
for future talks. In contrast to his anti-China rhetoric in his 2016 election
campaign, Trump expects both countries to overcome issues in the future. As
such, a trade war is unlikely to happen. In the meantime, China will take
measures to increase imports from and invest more in US. Thus, the CNY may
only depreciate at a milder pace in 2017.
